Topic: who reads the religion posts? Wed 12/19/07 12:21 PM
QUOTE:

sight atheist seem to flood such chat rooms, seems rather ironic, figuring they dont believe in such religions. but i guess that makes a civilized chat wouldnt you say?

Hey Kalamazoo,

Yeah, I can see how that would seem ironic, but from my viewpoint its not at all ironic. Many (certainly not all) atheists have a deep and passionate interest in "truth", so discussions of religion and philosophy would naturally be of particular interest to them.

If one categorizes people into 'religious' and 'not-religious', then maybe its strange for atheists to be talking religion. But if you consider people as "truth seeking" or "not truth seeking", then of course atheist (and theist) truth-seekers belong in any discussion about truth.

Just to be clear, I'm -not- questioning whether there are issue of bigotry that would cause problems in the workplace - I know there are. I'm just curious about the specific circumstances in which gays fear for being fired, i thought that was mostly behind us, as a civilization (he he).

Do they really fear being -fired-, or do they just fear all kinds of other problems interfering with their work relationships? And what part of the country are they in? In California, i have the impression (from talking to HR people) that most employers are -very- careful about firing minorities and homosexuals, due to equal opportunite laws.

When someone goes to your profile repeatedly who is not on your friend's list, yes I see that as harassment behavior or stalking and a form of methodical, deliberate, and persistent surveillance to see if one is online. Add some other indicators thrown in too... red flags go up.

Yokoke, thanks for explaining. I agree with you regarding "red flags" going up, but I just don't see how any reasonable person could consider "repeated viewing of a public profile" -all by itself- as a form of harassment. I'm assuming more is involved in your situation. You are right, though, such behavior could indicate (or not) a deeper problem.

QUOTE:

Yes! I certainly questioned, directly and without accusation, those that used to view my profile frequently/repeatedly.

QUOTE:

There are many misperceptions that because it's online through a forum, dating site, emails, cyber space that it is innocent and means nothing and that it has no way of escalating into something more.....is farther from the truth.

In general, yes, though I don't see any evidence of that mis-perception in this thread. Personally, I find the potential for online stalking more insidious than in-person stalking. With in-person stalking, you can catch them in the act and get a restraining order.

Dragoness,

I didn't mean to put words in Yokoke's mouth, I honestly don't understand all of what is being said in this thread, and only meant to give her a chance to clarify.

But I agree with you - I figure if I create a profile, I'm putting it out there for people to look at as much as they want.

Its like putting a personal ad in the paper, you can't help it if some random stranger cuts it out, puts in on their fridge, reads it 30 times a day while touching it lovingly and planning your marriage to them.

I'm confused. Yokoke, it may not be my business, and it may not relate to the issue at hand, but I'm curious if you consider someone repeatedly looking at your profile to be 'stalking behavior'.

a respectable relationship that has full of trust

That may be what alot of women want but I have yet to meet the girl that says "Damn you see that guy. mmmMMM he looks so reliable and trustworthy I jsut wanna jump him right now"

You never hear that because it doesn't work that fast. But its true, there are a lot of women out there who are really turned on by trustworthy men. Or, more accurately, they have so many guards up against the men they think are scumbags, that once they've decided you are trustworthy, all of their previously-held-in-check sexual appetite is directed at you.

Technically, no. Practically, yes. And it will. It has as much to do with personal egos as it does with the 'programming'.

"Mass, why a higher standard in public than private?"

Wow, many reasons. Its a courtesy to others, which I wish more people practiced.

Also, everyone has a different ability to properly interpret/understand a person's intentions or real thoughts - words are always inadequate, but I can be careless with certain people with no loss of meaning, or wrong assumptions.

Consider someone on meth, or the people you see in the streets talking to themselves, nonstop and vigorous. I see a continuos spectrum between that approach to expression/communication, and the contemplative, deliberate approach. Different degrees of self-censoring. We all choose different places on that spectrum, but I think we can all agree these threads would be nearly useless if all people always took the stream-of-consciouness meth-addict approach. So restraining oneself can be courtesy for the benefit of group dialogue.

" get down and dirty in the sex forum and then holier than thou in the religion forum. "
Wench,

I think that's just fine, as its only a product of particular worldviews that these are incompatible. Unless one "down & dirty" criticises another specifically for their "down and dirty" behavior.

Jess,

I think a lot of people are fake - even in real life. The internet makes it even easier and more tempting.

One can call this 'fake' - but I try to hold myself to a higher standard in public statements then I do in private statements.

"What other book can you spend a lifetime studing and still get more out of it every time?"

Many have said this of the Bhagavad Gita (sp). Its even been said of Shakespeare (sp).

Me, I'm still finding new meanings and lessons in Dr. Seuss (sp).

(sp) means I don't know how to spell.

What short threads we would have.

And where would I get my morning laughs?

I love the evolution debate, as it shows how much faith people have in the most modern of priests.

I want a fast, big-screen cell phone with a slide-out keyboard running OpenMoko.

I want a cell so capable I never miss using a desktop pc. I want to come home and drop my cell phone into a docking station connected to a full size keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc.

Oh, and I'd like a jar of whirled peas.

Yes, pre-installed Linux by major suppliers is having a come back! (This was tried years ago a quietly shelved - not this time!) Other major PC suppliers are following Dell's lead, plus ASUS and, um... Evertek (?) have released custom preloaded linux systems within the last week.

Check out the US$200 gOS based desktop PC carried at walmart, and the (sigh) US$400 ASUS EEE subnote.

I hear the gOS is short for "Green OS", because it is designed for low power systems and is energy efficient, but it also is preconfigured to use google apps, so some people think it means Google OS. I believe (?) you can download the linux/ubuntu/elive based gOS to use on your current hardware.

Thanks to low powered Linux boxes like the ASUS EEE, we even get to see new boxes preloaded with XP (this winter). Yay consumer choice! MS would love to abandon XP, but with being threatened by efficient Linux OS options, now MS is forced to continue encouraging XP.
