SUMTER, South Carolina (AP) -- A 12-year-old boy trick-or-treating with his family in central South Carolina was shot from inside a home Friday and killed, and his father and brother were wounded by the gunfire, authorities said.
Police converge on the scene of the fatal shooting of a trick-or-treater Friday night in Sumter, South Carolina.
The shooting suspect, Quentin Patrick, was in custody, a jail official said. Patrick, 22, has been charged with murder and three counts of assault and battery with intent to kill. The jail official said she didn't know whether Patrick had an attorney and his telephone number was unpublished.
The family was headed home from a city-sponsored event downtown when they decided to stop at a few homes, Sumter Police Chief Patty Patterson said. The father and his four children approached a home with a porch light on about 8:30 p.m. ET while their mother waited nearby in a vehicle.
As the family was at the door, they thought they heard fireworks. The 12-year-old boy, his father and brother were all hit by the gunfire. The boy died at a hospital, Coroner Verna Moore said. The other two children were not hurt.
The boy's father and brother were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities have not released the identity of the family.
Patterson also would not release any more details about the shooting.
"The investigation is continuing into what has been a very tragic evening," Patterson said. "Our sorrow and sympathy goes out to this family."
The police chief said there were other people inside the home at the time of the shooting, but she didn't expect any of them to be charged.
A neighbor said he heard a loud noise about the time of the shooting and thought it was simply Halloween mischief.
"I thought, trick-or-treat night -- pranks go down. Anything goes," said Lenwood Dixon, 49, who works at a hazardous waste and recycling company. "I heard a noise like maybe gunfire, then my daughter saw a bunch of lights flashing and saw some cops."
In his six years in the neighborhood, he said he wasn't aware of any violent crimes. He said a few trick-or-treaters had been on his block that night.
"I'm surprised. Since I was here, I'd never heard of anything like that happening. It's a quiet neighborhood," he said. "You don't see many children in the neighborhood. It's more elderly."

Police are investigating after a 6-month-old baby died and a 1-year-old child was taken to the hospital on Tuesday.
Sources tell NBC 6 reporter Steve Litz that the baby likely died from abuse.
Police received a call from a neighbor's house in Liberty City Tuesday afternoon saying a baby boy was having difficulty breathing. By the time the baby arrived at Jackson Memorial Hospital, he was pronounced dead.
A 1-year-old in the home was sick and was also taken to the hospital. The child remained hospitalized on Wednesday night.
Family friend Jason Williams said he felt "pretty bad" about the child's death.
Valerie Malloy, a concerned neighbor, said that somebody must know what happened.
The mother of four reportedly left her children with her boyfriend. Homicide detectives said they will determine if neglect played a factor in the baby's death.
"We're not going to rule that out, that will be the beginning of this investigation, but we have many people to interview, both here and at the Miami-Dade police headquarters," Detective Roy Rutland said.
The boyfriend has denied any wrongdoing.
Neighbors said the family moved in a few months ago.
Latarsha Hamilton, who lives nearby, said the mother had asked her Monday for money for her bills.
"She was just having a hard time, like nobody was helping her," she said. "She has a disabled child. Nothing like this though, we didn't think nothing like this."
The three surviving children are in Department of Children and Families' custody. A shelter hearing will be held Thursday to determine where to place the children.

I think earthquakes are kind of interesting. I've only felt a couple small ones myself. One in Virginia and one in Michigan. Places you don't normally associate with earthquakes.
I just looked at the US Geological Survey and the biggest ones have been in Alaska but high on the list of strongest quakes was Feb.7,1812 in New Madrid, Missouri.
Anyone on these boards ever been in a big quake?
we had one here about 14-15yrs ago
i can recall what the rictor scale was
but it felt if i recall even in nevada
my uncle had a resturant in klamath falls
and they felt the quake there, and while my uncle was on vacation they were watching the news and it showed his resturant falling down... the building was old |

DALLAS - Two minor earthquakes shook the Dallas-Fort Worth area late on Thursday and early on Friday, but no significant damage was immediately reported.
The U.S. Geological Survey said an earthquake with a 2.5 magnitude was reported at 11:25 p.m. Thursday, centered in the Grand Prairie area.
The agency said a slightly stronger quake, at 3.0 magnitude, occurred at 12:01 a.m. Friday, centered in Irving about 10 miles west of Dallas.

USGS geophysicist Randy Baldwin said aftershocks could last several days.
Law enforcement agencies across northern Texas received some 911 calls from people who had felt the quakes.
An April 7 earthquake in southern Texas had a 3.7 magnitude.
