People in the south, mostly females, I don't know exactly what the males might use, we call people "hon, sugar, darlin, etc". Most of the time, it's a form of endearment, but you'll find waitresses, clerks, etc. that don't know you, referring to you in one of these ways, simply acknowleding that you exist since we don't know your name. Twice, in the past month I've been reproached because I called someone "hon". Neither time did I know this persons name, one even after 4 emails wouldn't sign or say his name, the other mocked me in a thread. Since there's people from all over in these forums, do you find it offensive to be called any of the names mentioned above?
just done to make others feel welcomed - not derogatory.
I'm PROUD to have grown up in the south with all these wonderful southern females!!!!!
yer not the only one there fella,,,, i wouldnt trade it for any other spot in the country,, where else you gonna find the right food??? |

| i think its funny,, we talk about the way we are identified by our region,,, and the way we are brought up,, and still,, no one ever realizes,, there are excptions to every rule. cept one. we are all humans. and we all have a certain amount of smarts that we either choose to use or not. i could choose to be completely southern,, meaning never go north for anything, farm for the rest of my life, and be an outcast,, or i can be a college graduate and you would never know i came from a place where even if your a young child,, you are expected to get up at 5 like the rest of the family and get the work that needs to be done that day completed. |

| its like calling me a country boy,, or my friend from wisconsin a cheesehead,, its a term used to tell where they are from and how they were raised. |

Thank goodness ! I was about to post asking if I'm the only Brit in this thread. Hi Dan
I know it gets boring when you are left in the company of yanks! lol!
they aren't ALL yanks. aren't the yanks in the north only?
All Americans are yanks to me, i dont discriminate.

| coonass is a bayou raised person,, and you have to listen to them very well to understand them,, it helps if you already can understand a southern drawl. |
