ive only seen a few threads cover this topic, and in Denver its nearly legal
What is the biggest bong youve hit off of?
mine was an 8 footer made from a 4ft candy cane yard ornament and a 4 foot "pog" holder with a hookah stem. took 2 people to use, unless you had go go gadget arms. back in high school.

in bong engineering it is desirable to match the bong volume to the TLC (total lung capacity) - RV (residual volume) of the owner for optimum efficiency and absorption.
since the average values for adult males are ~6 L for TLC and ~1.2 L for RV, on average a great size for BV (bong volume) is 4.8 liters. 4.8 L is 4800 cc so that is the volume of a 2" diameter tube (5 cm) which is 240 cm 2.4 m long. 2.4 meters is ~94.5 inches yep - that's 7 ft and 10.5 inches long...
so 8 foot long and 2 inches in diameter is about optimally right for guys... 
the rest of it is all in the bowl size, pack, light...
and, of course, tolerance and technique...

Took a fish tank pump and hooked it to the lid of a six way hooka, dropped in an oz and a match. What a party. But it wasn't a bong. It was 4 feet high though.
