Thinking of going to 64 bit. Need to know if there are issues with older programs(1-3 years) like messengers, etc working with a 64 bit os. Any one got any clues?

I've heard about some problems with a 64 bit OS, but overall I haven't heard anyone mentioning much as far as problems go. As far as 64 bit hardware, I've had absolutely no issues there. I'm still using 32 bit OS though, so I can't speak for those.

It depends. If you're talking about Vista, Vista doesn't like anything 16 bit. Several programs I have had to be rewritten specifically for Vista and even then still didn't work right.
I don't know about XP though. I would imagine it's probably similar.

haven't heard of any real issues with 64bit, but maybe not having software for it. Only thing your really getting out of it would be crunching numbers, IMO. And yes Vista don't like nothin. Found out you can't run something made on Vista on XP, like PowerPoints. It didn't like that...

I hear that from a friend that the only major problem he had with his 64 bit system was running old games and some new games do not support 64 bit so if your a pc gamer you might want to look into that before switching

There is nowhere near the programs available for the 64bit OS's that there are for the 32bits.
Many games as well arent compatible with 64bits
I have a 64 bit processor & the 32 bit XP & Vista run better than 64 bits. Same goes for the Linux distros. 32 are faster

That's why you dual boot with XP 32 and Vista 64. Problem solved. Or just go with Linux instead. Meh.

Anything that doesn't work in Vista works in XP. And if you hose one OS, you have a backup. Vista seems to like to break after certain patches.

seems pointless to have vista at all then if it has so many problems.
just use XP & partition you drive for important data then wait & see how Windows 7 will turn out. ;)

That's what restore points are for 
XP doesn't have DX10 which is required for a lot of the newer games now. XP also doesn't see the 4GB of ram I have in my system. (I think it's a limitation with any 32 bit OS.)
And no need to partition for important data. The XP partition is 250 Gigs and the Vista partition is 2TB. Then I have an external that's another 160 Gigs on the side. So I've got plenty of room for both.

true about the ram & games. I fail to remember there are hardcore gamers out there
but if that partition corrupts then all is lost which is the reason for separate partitions
