I think some things from someone's past might be better off left unsaid.
If it's something that may hurt/harm them in anyway, then they should be told.

You should disclose things to your mate, though!! Nothing like finding out too late that there's something that person would find unacceptable about you. If you feel the need to keep something a "secret", it's something you likely are ashamed of or embarrassed about. Not always, but still....
