I am German and spent a good half of my life learning English in Europe. I was excited to move to the states to see what the big fuss is all about! Little did I realize that my English is off no use here unless I chat on Mingle. laugh

Very few speak English in Miami. laugh

so here I am taking classes for Spanish, which isn't that hard to learn!

Addendum...

Obviously you must have needed something from the corporation you called else you would not have this problem with pressing '1'.
Most corporations in existance today are international...

That said...

It seems like they are quite nice to you that speak english...

They provide you with a way of communication that best suits your limited language skills...

while still providing for the language(s) spoken in most of the rest of the world.

Be glad they do not have your hardline approach and force you to learn spanish to get what you want from them.

To hear more languages spoken in the streets here would be wonderful. It would inspire me to learn a few myself.

English will always be used here, so what if we expand our liguistic forte to include some other languages.

I wished my ancestors would have kept the different languages we spoke. If they had I would speak German, Irish, American Indian fluently.

I don't think there's anyone that speaks "American Indian" fluently. ;)

Anyway, I agree. I love linguistic diversity. There is a point where you have to speak a common language in order for things to work, but just having multiple languages spoken in one country is not some kind of sign of the decline of the English language. And, hey, someday the majority language of the U.S. might be a language other than English. It could be that it's evolved from English the same way modern English evolved from Old English into a new language, or it could be that shifts in immigration have caused the change...but I don't know, I don't see that as a bad thing. These things tend to happen naturally and gradually, not by government mandate where people are forced to learn a new language. I

Speaking of banks... I got a call from Bank of America one night. The caller said his name was John Smith, in an Indian accent. Caller ID said the call was coming from Toronto. The whole thing made me laugh.

I think Americans should learn at least one other language besides English for many reasons. There's really no negative to being bilingual.

Look i aint racist i just love my country. When the immagrants came in in the '20's and 30's and before the took classes to learn our language so they could be productive members of society. I want a Ranch and if i find out that someone is not here leagally then they are gone back to where ever they came from.

What are your thoughts?

There is nothing wrong with what you are saying. Immigrants who come here should learn the language & what it means to be an American. Coming in any other way causes more trouble than what it's worth.

The problem with those who think you are wrong is that they can't see the error of being a nation divided. They don't mind lawbreakers because they can "control" them. Now you know why they are called...the COUNTER culture.
